wake up calls

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

on tuesday morning, i set my alarm for 6am. i was going to try to go swimming. HA! that did not end up happening. unfortunately, the alarm clock in the hotel has this feature where it turns off after you snooze too many times (why?!?!?) so i ended up waking up at 8:20… the time i was supposed to meet my coworker for breakfast.

well, last night… i again thought about attempting to go swimming. so i set up a wakeup call at 7am and set the alarm for 8am. two things to wake me up just in case and it’s tough sleeping through a wake up call!

the phone rang at 7am… and when i picked up… there was just nothing. not a “good morning! this is your wake up call”… nothing! where’s that southern hospitality i heard so much about?! what kind of crap wake up call is this?! even I gave better wake up calls for circle k… and i wasn’t even awake when i made those phone calls!!!!

after such a disappointing wake up call, i couldn’t bring myself to get up. so i went back to sleep. and then woke up late again…. was late meeting my coworker for breakfast again. man! i have to quit with the snoozing!

office space

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

for my birthday this past year, annE gave me a copy of office space. perhaps i complained about work too much because i don’t know how she ever got the impression my job was so boring and i didn’t like it…. hehehehe

i had seen the movie before, but never found it that funny. well, i watched the movie again. this time, SO much more funny and in some ways, so much more sad. i totally related to the guy! if my high school counselor asked me what i would do if i had a million dollars, i’d say nothing too!

sigh… rumors swirling among the chinese school mothers’ network that i’m not happy with my job and am looking. apparently, one of them has already called me with some information. i need to check voicemail

productivity

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

today i think i walked into someone’s meeting

…. in the bathroom!! i walked into the bathroom this morning and i see two people standing around by the mirrors. at first i thought they were washing their hands, but no… they appeared as if they were just standing around. then a voice from inside one of the stalls starts talking. by then, i had already went into a stall myself so i’m just there attending to my business while the 3 of them discussed something… i have no clue what. eventually, they finish and they all leave. weiiird… i guess it’s more productive to multi-task but i dunno… when i’m in the bathroom, i like to focus on the task at hand and nothing else…

speaking of productivity, i just wasted almost half a hour trying to clear my desktop. i have this tendency for “convenience” to put everything straight to my desktop- easy access right? well i kept putting everything onto my desktop that one time my manager came over to help me and saw my desktop and was like whoa!! more recently, it’s gotten to the point that there was no more space to add anything new to the desktop. i assume that it was adding to the right and off of my screen… if i tried to “arrange icon,” it ended up overlapping the icons. grr…. no easy way to get to everything except opening an explorer window and navigating to Documents and Settings/username/Desktop… which defeats the whole purpose of having everything on the desktop! so i just cleaned it up :-) wow, nothing like having a clean desktop

this… plus having sent 2 emails within the past 2 days AND responding to a phone call today… wow, i was productive!

if you want to feel old…

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

i read a cnn article about the class of 2009 “mindset” list at beloit college. wow, that article made me feel old!! first off… class of two-thousand-nine?!?! whoooa… when did we get that high!?! i still remember when i was the class of 2000! (double 0!!) i’m still not used to saying class of 2004…. and now we’re already on class of 2009!?

then i saw the list.. and that made me feel even older

bah, but here’s the link to beloit college’s mindset lists for the class of 2002-2009… http://www.beloit.edu/~pubaff/mindset/

“sniper” weddings

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

so over lunch saturday, i thought up a new business idea…. “sniper” (zeke named it) weddings!!

so the idea basically is for people who want to get married in a famous, public place (prerequisite: you must be able to buy general admissions into the place) i.e. sistine chapel, buckingham palace, taj mahal, etc etc. they’d hire my company to handle all the logistics of the wedding, from getting decorations into the area, getting all the guests (each with their own admissions tickets) in at the same time, sneaking the wedding photographers into position, choregraphing the entrance of the bridal party (again with their own admissions tickets), rolling out the carpet, bribing the organist (or bring in our own organist/musician) to play the music as the bride enters, timing all this so that other random tourists aren’t gawking in the photos and finishing all this before the security guards come! bride and groom will be available for pictures at the reception following at the local jail (zeke thought of a brilliant idea too… to tack on a law office to the business to represent the bride and groom after the wedding.)

who wants to be a guinea pig for me while i perfect the logistics?!? it’ll be free for you since you’ll be working out all the kinks in my plan!

dave & tope’s wedding!

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

dave and tope

wow, dave and tope are married!

my first married friends! it’s weird to think of them as married. i still remember tope in high school weirding me out (she was quite weird) and then dave in college weirding me out… wow, they make such a weird, perfect couple! :-)

the wedding was beautiful, tope’s family wore some traditional attire… i tried to get a pic of it, but the camera was running out of batteries… but it looked really cool. here’s tope with her dad, and a picture of someone else letting me take a picture of their headpiece:

tope and dadhead

at the end of the ceremony, tope and dave walked down the aisle together to… the star wars song! noo dave! no dave! so nerdy!! sigh, i suppose that was his one must-have for his wedding day…

it was great seeing old CMU people again. saw some old Wootton people too… reaaally weird! Simmy made a comment about seeing me in a dress and contacts for the first time (even though i have worn both many times before) and if there’s anyone who doesn’t have the right to make such a comment… it’d be HER! she’s the one person who’d be less likely to be wearing a dress than me!!

soo tired from the weekend though, lots of fun playing charades and telephone pictionary. hahah, that game is awesome! spent most of sunday sleeping trying to recover. thanks wayne for letting us borrow your camera! more wedding pics here

classic kids television

Thursday, August 18th, 2005

“classic” (purely from my generation’s perspective, this would be late 80s to 90s) kids television was so much more educational than the current selection of TV shows.

prime example would be animaniacs… i learned so many things from them! country names, all the states and their capitals, a bunch of english words, multiplication, the planets in the solar system, parts of the brain, a bunch of different ways to say hello…

another example that i just ran into… while reading an article about how scientists are thinking of bring lions and elephants from africa to the great plains of the US in order to help protect them from extinction, they brought up how although the african lions and elephants have never lived in the great plains, their ancestors the mastodons, camels and saber-toothed cats have. and then i remembered…

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS!!! mastodon was the black ranger, and saber-tooth tiger (must be pronounced with fobby accent a la trini) was the yellow ranger!

mm, i miss good ole kids TV shows

YAY!!

FINALLY beat bubble bobble! it’s been so long, i’ve forgotten what the happy end actually looked like. been bugging my roommate for the past couple of weeks (since i rediscovered the game) to help me beat the game ’cause you need 2 players in order to get the happy end. and today, after much playing (and her nearly beating the game on her own before we were both unable to pop the monster in time), we finally beat the game.

man! i would’ve liked to have posted a screenshot of bub and bob with our girlfriends but alas, my emulator didn’t allow me to take a screenshot. and plus, bub and bob aren’t as cute now that they’re not dinosaurs. here’s a screenshot of the message that has been haunting me for the past few weeks…. NO MORE! :-D

bubble bobble bad

now i can go to sleep happy…. (though i have wasted the past few hours playing the game again trying to discover more of the secrets! so addictive!!!)

on a completely random note: i went to DC with some high school friends this weekend. there were some friendly guys who talked to us. (nice guys compared to the boring MIT guys who tried to hit on mariam the first time :-P or that drunk 19 year old jerk from the other time ) apparently, they knew of my sister. (who doesn’t?!) well i hadn’t had a chance to ask my sister yet since she’s really busy at med school, but then she posted a xanga entry in which a friend of her’s IMed to say that some friends met my friends and i. whoa… this, in combination with meeting my sister’s high school friend nancy (who knows most of the CMU/DC people i know) AND the CMU/DC people knowing a girl who went to the same chinese school i went to when i was a kid and who somehow ended up in the same apartment building as my sister in NYC… leads me to believe that it is indeed too small of a world. i have decided that i am moving to montana, where hopefully no one knows my sister.

Tune #1

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

Can you guess what song I’m playing? BAH!

Tune 1

Will update with more clues later, as I suspect no one will be able to tell what the heck I was playing. Sadly, this is the song that (in my opinion) I’m the closest to sounding like the actual song.
