my scot-irish heritage

i always knew that President Harry S. Truman did not have a name for a middle name, but only an initial. but i just found out the reason why… His parents chose “S” as his middle name, in attempt to please both of Harry’s grandfathers, Anderson Shippe Truman and Solomon Young, but it didn’t stand for anything, as was a common practice among Scots-Irish.[1]

my middle name is H. not my middle initial… just my middle name. if you look on my license, it does not have a period following the H. same with my social security card. i need to go home and check to see if my diplomas have a period at the end of it.

it’s good to know that my parents followed this Scot-Irish tradition of picking a middle name that didn’t stand for anything.
