MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!

Monday, December 17th, 2007

this tuesday.
december 18, 2007.
a momentous occasion.
to borrow from barney of himym, “legend-… wait for it… and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant because the second half of that word is DAIRY!”

call in sick.
take a vacation day.
run out for a “coffee break” and never return because…

BRING IT ON: IN IT TO WIN IT is coming out on DVD!!!!!!!!!!! yes yes, straight to DVD like all the truly awesome movies. because who’d want to see it in a dark, dirty theater sitting on uncomfortable theater chairs with the volume way too high. no… a movie as awesome (ly bad) as bring it on: in it to win it deserves/can only be seen in the comforts of home!

to whet your appetite:
Southern California high school senior Carson arrives at the all-important “Cheer Camp Nationals” determined to lead her squad, the West High Sharks, to victory. But chic New Yorker Brooke and her team, the East High Jets, are equally steadfast in their pursuit of the coveted “Spirit Stick.” As tension mounts between the two rival squads, Carson falls for fellow cheerleader Penn, not realizing he’s a Jet. When Brooke discovers the budding romance, she raises the stakes by challenging Carson to a one-on-one cheer-off. A spectacular “cheer fighting” sequence erupts into a huge brawl and cheerleaders on both sides are injured, leaving both teams with a shortage of cheerleaders. With their dreams of taking home the top prize all but shattered, the leaders of both squads realize they’ll have to take drastic measures to stay in the game.

i’ll see YOU waiting in line outside the blockbuster!

the end of sopranos & veronica mars

Monday, June 11th, 2007

the sopranos ended last night. unfortunately i didn’t watch it, but will catch up later this week. but hahah, like always, i read reviews and general summaries of the episode. it’s hard to remain spoiler free!!! i had previously written a draft of a post about the finale of veronica mars and it seems veronica mars & sopranos ended somewhat similar to each other – very open ended, no real resolution of anything, life goes on kind of endings.

i heard mixed reviews of the “life goes on” finale (for both series)… but i think i actually kind of favor them. yeah, after spending X amount of years following characters, it is nice to get a little resolution on what’s going on in their lives. but then that’s just it… if there’s resolution to everything going on, what then? basically their life is over because everything you really cared about got neatly wrapped up. i like the “life goes on” kind of finales because it makes it seem like the characters are still living and doing stuff, even if you’re not around to experience it with them.

here’s what i had originally said about the veronica mars finale…

veronica mars aired its series finale last night. the cw kept advertising it as a season finale… dumb, most everyone already knew that it has/is going to can the series, since it’s not on the fall schedule for 2007.

i hadn’t watched the last few episodes… like grey’s anatomy, the show just seemed to not be the same anymore and it wasn’t must-see tv for me. so i was pretty out of date, though luckily i read spoilers/reviews :P instead of watching. a lot of people criticized the creator of the show for not wrapping up all the stories, especially since it seemed likely that they were to be canned. i guess the feeling was that it was really just a season finale and he never had a chance to write a series finale.

i’m not sure… but i kind of saw it as a series finale and i kind of liked it more that way. the last episode seemed the most like the old veronica mars that i remember… i think i liked it better when veronica was on her “me and my dad vs. everyone else except maybe wallace” tick. that’s when she’d have the witty, biting comments and interesting situations. i don’t think i really cared for veronica’s relationship to work out with logan (even tho i did think they were cute together)… only because i felt like it took away from logan’s character… he just seemed to be all lovey dovey, no longer getting into as much trouble, etc.

having keith “save” veronica was awesome too. i had begun to worry that keith and veronica would have a huge riff in their great father-daughter relationship. but seeing what keith did to save veronica just confirmed how awesome he was. and it was ok that he (i guess this is implied) lost the sheriff election… i didn’t really like him as sheriff. he was much cooler as a private investigator.

so the finale of veronica mars was actually kind of satisfying to me… too bad the show is gone though. even tho i didn’t watch as much towards the end, there really isn’t that much awesome television on anymore!

come on down! the price is right!

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Bob Barker is retiring this may/june from hosting the price is right.  i remember watching this show with my grandma when i was a kid.  i always associate Bob Barker with the price is right… it’s hard to imagine anyone else hosting the show.  despite happy gilmore portraying him differently, i always imagined Bob Barker to be a nice, grandfatherly man… he always seemed sad when the contestant didn’t win the prize.  and always allowed the contestant to hug him (with or without squealing at the same time :P ).  i’ll miss Bob.

cnn had an article about who the next host of the show will be.  names being tossed around include George Hamilton, Mario Lopez, Mark Steines, Todd Newton, John O’Hurley, and “Beauty and the Geek” host Mike Richards.  i know i’m greatly biased towards Bob, but i just can’t seem some of these people as host of the show.  Mario Lopez??  heck no!  George Hamilton has the aged look, but he doesn’t come off as grandfatherly as Bob does for me.  i have no idea who Todd Newton is.  For me, John O’Hurley comes off kind of arrogant… maybe because i’m used to his character from seinfeld.  i don’t really think much of the host of “Beauty and the Geek”

i hope they find a good person to replace Bob.  i’m not sure what you look for in a game show host… but he definitely had it.

why 24 sucks

WARNING: may contain 24 spoilers

i’ve never been a big fan of 24. but i’ll watch it because i watch pretty much everything on tv. it’s usually fairly entertaining. there’s always been a lot of suspension of disbelief… you have to overlook A LOT on that show. but i started getting used to overlooking such things and enjoying the show just for the action and drama (however unbelievable) that it produces.

however, i feel like this season is the worst of the seasons i’ve watched (i think i’ve seen parts of 1,3,4 and 5… though really i only know for sure that i’ve watched all of season 5 since that’s the only one i followed on tv… wait, i don’t think i watched the end of season 5 because tina went back to taiwan… anyways…)

maybe it’s just that i’ve started to notice things that have always been there, but only now annoy me. there’s always been some dumb things about 24 – how there’s always a mole… how they always accuse the wrong person of being the mole… how the minor CTU field people always get killed and jack has to do everything himself… how the “real-time” timing of things just isn’t realistic (driving in LA traffic, no need for sleep/eating/pooping/peeing, instantaneous recovery from wounds, etc.) but i felt like as long as you ignored those plot problems, the overall story was compelling and the characters interesting enough that you could get into it.

now i feel like the show is getting worse. i don’t care to watch; i fall asleep during episodes; i don’t care if so-and-so gets killed by terrorists. the writers drop storylines episodes at a time (where has president logan and mrs. logan gone??  what about jack’s dad!?) the character development has become so predictable and corny… i feel like the writers are forcing these characters on us… that we’re supposed to like this character because they show him doing this or that and we’re supposed to be suspicious of this character because of that or this. they introduced a new character this season, doyle (little ricky schroeder from silver spoons!) and i find him so boring that whenever they try to introduce some of his back story, i just don’t care. in fact, i’m turned off by his character because i feel like they’re trying to make him out to be like jack… there’s only one jack! and it’s not because i feel like doyle is infringing on jack’s character (i don’t care about jack that much…) it’s more i feel like the writers are being lazy by making his character just like another character whom they know everyone likes.

and what’s up with CTU employees developing high school like crushes on coworkers so quickly? so they’ve always had CTU romances… like tony and michelle. but they’re going overboard now… with bill and karen (whom i think are a cute couple but c’mon!! do i really care to hear their lovey-dovey phone conversations?!? i watch 24 for the action!) and now milo and nadia with their on-again-off-again, do-we-acknowledge-don’t-we-acknowledge relationship that developed over like… 2 hours! and the biggest thing with these relationships is because the writers do such a shotty job at developing the characters individually, do we even care about the characters when they start relationships?! i don’t!

the only character that seems to be developed is jack. maybe in seasons past, they had other characters that were equally developed and interesting (i.e. chloe in previous seasons… this season she just doesn’t seem to be interesting). but everything became so jack-centric that they stopped developing the other characters so now the show is almost entirely dependent on jack. if jack’s not in the scene, it seems to drag… characters talking mumbo jumbo, who cares? where’s jack?! there’s no way the show can survive if jack has to do everything (ok, arguably it’s survived 5 seasons with jack doing everything… but at least there were some other people minorly developed). it’s a vicious cycle… by focusing on jack, none of the other characters get developed. because none of the other characters get developed, no one wants to see a scene without jack so the writers will of course write more jack scenes.

the state of tv saddens me. ON a side note: looks like 7th Heaven is FINALLY getting canned! maybe there’s some hope :)

george at the oscars!!

Monday, February 26th, 2007

george was a guest of Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin, of Little Miss Sunshine, last night!!  apparently, he even made a few appearances on screen though argggh, ironically, i never caught a glimpse of it!!

i googled afterwards.  seems she’s a fan of curious george :)   yay for other people liking george!  maybe this is the start of his comeback.  winnie the pooh’s got nothing on my monkey!!

NC!

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

so this weekend was the “annual” (not really ’cause we missed 2006 and made up for it by going in january 2007) trip to NC!

roundtrip ticket to NC – $128.60
parking fee at airport – $30
roundtrip driving (in the ice/snow on the way back) to BWI so i could fly Southwest – 2+ hours
(alternatively, a 4 hour drive down after being delayed at the dealership for several hours, but 6+ hour drive in the snow back by Larry and Angela)
listening to mariam sing while driving – priceless

so apparently the only two songs on the radio in NC is fergilicious by fergie and what goes around by justin timberlake. really. only those two songs. every time we got in the car and turned on the radio, it would be one of those two songs. after attempting to decipher the lyrics to the songs over mariam loudly singing her made up lyrics… i finally looked up the tricky lyrics to fergilious and what goes around…

fergie is, in fact, trying to spell tasty and delicious as we suspected in the car. (we’re not very good verbal spellers and it doesn’t help when mariam just starts to recite the alphabet after D…)

T to the A to the S T E Y girl you tasty, T to the A to the S T E Y girl you tasty
D to the E to the L I C I O U S, to the D to the E to the, to the, to the, hit it Fergie

apparently fergie isn’t very good at verbally spelling either…. tastey? we figured she was just elongating the T so that it would fit the rhythm of the song. fergie also counts similarly to mariam – “And they be lining down the block just to watch what I got (four, tres, two, uno)”… except mariam is more “A… B… C… 4″

and in what goes around, justin timberlake is actually saying:

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

very different than what angela or mariam were saying…

lots of fun this weekend :) i almost got over my fear of dogs. almost.  however, mariam still scares me.

“we drink our enemies’ blood”

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

cnn had an article about radical vs. moderate muslims. they entitled it Radical Muslim: We drink our enemies’ blood. all i could think of was…. WARNING: 24 SPOILER!!!! well, jack bauer eats our enemies!

in any case, i was wondering whether middle eastern people get tired of playing the bad guys every season (i’ve watched) of 24. doesn’t it feel like we’re constantly picking on them since they’re always the villians. would the show be less interesting if the bad person was american or canadian or british? has there been a season where there’s been a non-middle eastern villian? (i haven’t watched all seasons of 24)

i would find a season of 24 where the villian is canadian to be amusing :-P tho i may be in the minority here…

edit: oops, i have a short term memory.  i guess last season’s villians weren’t middle eastern, but 2 of the 3 seasons i’ve watched have been!

remixes

Monday, December 4th, 2006

i don’t like remixes… nine times out of ten, i like the original more than the remix. the reason i bring this up is because of a certain song being played often on the radio… gwen stefani’s wind it up.

what the heck. why does she randomly break into the lonely goatherd from sound of music… why gwen, why!?! i laughed when you started singing like a cheerleader (B-A-N-A-N-A-S! bananas!) even though i didn’t like the song. but now yodeling?! i wonder if this is going to be a growing trend… no longer just remixing other pop/rock tunes, but now show tunes and classical music pieces?

other bad remixes -

My Country ‘Tis of Thee remix of God Save the Queen – stealing someone else’s national anthem, changing the words and calling it your own! terrible! (i guess this is not a true remix since the lyrics have changed, but still)
along the same lines of that… the State of Maryland’s remix of O Tannenbaum
Veronica Mars’ remix of We Used to be Friends

good remixes -

pearl jam’s remix of last kiss, though the original is quite good too.
hrm.. i’m really grasping for good remixes… anyone have any good/bad remixes they particularly love/hate?

susan kidd is leaving too…

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/20/AR2006112001376.html

Susan Kidd is leaving too!!!
NBC4 is upsetting me! you develop a bond with your news anchor… a relationship!! you see them every day, they report to you the news of the day cheerfully. they joke around with one another and you feel like you’ve gotten to know them a bit. you trust them because u’ve received the news from them for the past X many years and you know that what they report is true (and when they are wrong, they apologize) u can’t just replace them with other people just like that! they better not get rid of jim vance, doreen gentzler, or bob ryan… they’re an institution! if they get rid of them, i’m not watching nbc4 anymore!!

i heard about this about a week ago… i was standing on the metro when i saw a familiar face smiling from a picture in the newspaper… it was that picture of susan kidd! then i read the headline. i actually gasped outloud on the metro! haha, i was reading over someone’s shoulder so i just looked the other way, but then i came home and looked it up.

just too upsetting….
